Kate Thomas

Kathleen Thomas

Kate was born and raised on Guam to Steve and Sally Thomas. She graduated from JFK High School (Class of 1972) and attended the University of Guam pursuing her general education and taking social work courses. She has extensive experiences in human services, having served over 20 years in the field. Her past positions include house parent, crisis worker and caseworker for Sanctuary, Inc, Case Manager for Guma Mami and Administrative Assistant for the Protection and Advocacy Office. She is currently a ParaProfessional/Homemaker for the Bureau of Social Services Administration at the Department of Public Health and Social Services. To augment her human services work, she has also been an educator at San Vicente and Santa Barbara Schools and with the Department of Education as a CRT at F.B. Leon Guerrero Middle School and substitute teacher at Ulloa Elementary.

Her many years of experiences are complimented by extensive community services to Inafa Maolek as a certified mediator as well as a facilitator for the Chansa program at the Department of Youth Affairs, a co-facilitator for parenting groups at Sanctuary, and as a group facilitator and residential manager for the Oasis Empowerment Recovery Center for Women. Kate has served on many task forces and professional groups including being an officer for the Guam Association of Social Workers and a board member for Guma Mami, Inc.

Kate's outstanding contributions to the community are well known and acknowledged. In 2006, she received the prestigious Public Citizens Award from the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Guam Chapter and later that same year was awarded the Community Service Award from the Department of Public Health and Social Services and the Governor's MagHope Award of Excellence for 2006.

Spending time with her family, being in fellowship, practicing her faith, and exercising are Kate's favorites activities after work and volunteering in the community. She is also a talented vocalist who inspires many with her voice. Kate's lastest interest is getting healthy and working out at the Kotenda's Gym.

Her family consists of her daughter Kathleen and son- in- law Tommy Benavente with their four children Donavin, Byron, Kaeleen and Allysa. Her siblings include her brother Steve (Arizona) and sisters Carmelita (South Carolina), Angelina (Texas) and Sarah (Latte Plantation, Guam). Her extended family includes her life long friends, God children, and other relatives on Guam, the Philippines and the U.S. mainland.
