I MINA'BENTE OCHO NA LIHESLATURAN GUÅHAN

Relative to commending and congratulating Guma’ Mami for its twenty-five (25) years of providing service, advocacy and support to adults in our community with intellectual disabilities, mental illness and other developmental disabilities; and paying tribute to the dedicated employees and volunteers of Guma’ Mami.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF I MINA'BENTE OCHO NA LIHESLATURAN GUÅHAN:

WHEREAS, the week of May 21 to May 28, 2006 is the Twenty-fifth (25th) Annual Celebration of Guma’ Mami and this year's theme is “Guma’ Mami, Inc., Twenty-five (25) Years of Celebrating Abilities”; and

WHEREAS, Guma’ Mami is a well-known non-profit local organization whose mission is to support, enhance and improve the quality of life of persons with disabilities; and


WHEREAS, through the talents of the excellent, passionate and dedicated staff and management, Guma’ Mami is able to involve the private business sector, obtain local and federal resources, and create consumer and family involvement to enhance the lives of the individuals it cares for; and


WHEREAS, due to the support and active participation of its volunteer general membership, including its Board of Directors under the guidance and leadership of its President, Mrs. Connie B. Duenas, Guma’ Mami has proven to be very successful; and


WHEREAS, in conjunction with other agencies, Guma’ Mami participated in many programs, training sessions and conferences throughout 2005 and 2006 that facilitated the movement and evolution of human services; and


WHEREAS, Guma’ Mami continues to advocate for system changes and provide I Liheslaturan Guåhan meaningful advice on policies relevant to the lives of persons with disabilities; and


WHEREAS, Guma’ Mami is an active participant in many distinguished councils, including the Guam Developmental Disabilities Council (GDDC), the Department of Integrated Services for Individuals with Disabilities (DISID), the Creative Funding Task Force, Guam Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Education, Research & Service (Guam CEDDERS), the Guam System for Assistive Technology (GSAT) Advisory Council, the Guam Mental Health Planning Council and the Public Guardian Review Board; and


WHEREAS, through its federal grant project, “STOP Violence Against Women with Disabilities,” Guma’ Mami provides prevention, awareness, legal services, and domestic violence training for law enforcement agencies to more effectively assist victims of domestic violence; and


WHEREAS, in past years, Guma’ Mami has provided essential case management services, support groups, peer counseling services and educational workshops to women with disabilities and seniors who are victims of domestic violence, sexual assault and stalking, and educational classes for adults with disabilities; and


WHEREAS, in March 2006, Guma’ Mami, in collaboration with the Guam Developmental Disabilities Council (GDDC) and the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency (CAHA), presented an art exhibit, entitled: “On Exhibit 2006: Art Without Walls,” of works by individuals with disabilities, together with the works of established local artists, showing the potential of persons with disabilities to excel in the arts; and


WHEREAS, Guma’ Mami has mounted various creative fundraising initiatives to provide financial support to consumers with disabilities; now, therefore, be it


RESOLVED, that the Executive Committee of I Mina'Bente Ocho Na Liheslaturan Guåhan does hereby, on behalf of I Liheslaturan Guåhan and the people of Guam, commend and congratulate Guma’ Mami on its twenty-five (25) years of providing service, advocacy and support to adults in our community with intellectual disabilities, mental illness and other developmental disabilities; and be it further


RESOLVED, that the Executive Committee of I Mina' Bente Ocho Na Liheslaturan Guåhan does hereby, on behalf of I Liheslaturan Guåhan and the people of Guam, express its support to the dedicated, passionate and hardworking employees of Guma’ Mami, and does further pay tribute to them during the Twenty-Fifth (25th) Anniversary of Guma’ Mami; and be it further


RESOLVED, that the Speaker and the Chairman of the Executive Committee certify, and the Secretary of the Legislature attest to, the adoption hereof, and that copies of the same be thereafter transmitted to Mrs. Monica F. Limtiaco, Executive Director of Guma’ Mami, Inc.; to Mrs. Connie B. Duenas, President, Guma’ Mami Board of Directors; to Ms. Rosanne Ada, Director, Department of Integrated Services for Individuals with Disabilities; to Mr. J. Peter Roberto, Director, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse; to Mr. Ronald De Guzman, Executive Director, Guam Housing and Urban Renewal Authority; to Mr. Joseph T. Flores, Executive Director, Guam Developmental Disabilities Council; to Ms. Sylvia Flores, Director of the Guam Council on the Arts and Humanities Agency; to Mrs. Cecilia Morrison, Grants Administrator of the Governor’s Community Outreach Federal Programs Office; and to the Honorable Felix P. Camacho, I Maga'lahen Guåhan.

DULY AND REGULARLY ADOPTED BY THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE OF I MINA'BENTE OCHO NA LIHESLATURAN GUÅHAN ON THE 10TH DAY OF MAY 2006.
